First and foremost, it is important to know what a grant is, as there are many common misconceptions about it. A grant is money that is given by the government. Many people tend to believe that government grants are free money. However, this is not the truth. Grants can be free money, as long as you meet all of the requirements that are necessary to get that free money. It is important to know that if you do not meet the requirements of the grant, you will need to pay the government back in some form or another. If you fail to pay by money, you may even end up serving time in jail.
If you are still interested in getting a grant, it is useful for you to know what types of government grants there are out there that you may be eligible for. Although we would all love to get grants, unfortunately, the government does not give them out to everybody- and especially not without good reason. Luckily, there are a number of different government grants that are out there which you may be eligible for that may be useful for you.
One of the most well known types of grants are student grants that act as financial aid for college students. The truth in the matter is that many college students need help paying school. Eligibility is based on the students familys financial situation. If you are eligible for a student government grant, the amount of money that you will receive will vary. The amount that you get may only be a low percentage, or it may cover all of your classes as well as your books, room and board. There are also work study programs which the student may be eligible for, in which he or she will work at the school while attending.
Another very common type of government grant is a business grant. With a business grant, you are given money from the government in order to begin a new business or to expand a business that you already own. A lot of the time, business grants are targeted towards certain groups of people (i.e. women, certain ethnic groups, etc).
While you have probably heard of both student and business grants, chances are that you have probably never heard of foundation grants. These are grants which are given to groups of people who aim to help improve society or the environment. A good example of a group who would be given a foundation grant is a flood or hurricane disaster relief group.
